Soundtracking - Sound Off: Your First Concert
by Laura Cushing

Sound Off:
What was your first concert experience?

Terami Hirsch, musician: My first concert (besides going to the LA Philharmonic with my mom every month) was in 1987. Around that time, I was obsessed with the film "La Bamba" and the only music I listened to was pop from the 1950s.  In the hillside of my hometown, we have an outdoor theatre. As a surprise, my parents took me there with a picnic basket, blankets, and a pair of binoculars to enjoy an early evening concert with about a dozen oldies bands performing music from that era. I cried and sang and danced and made a general monkey of myself. Lou Diamond Phillips made a guest appearance at the show and my dad asked him to sign a record for me. I was so excited about that record, that when he gave it to me, I squeezed it and snapped it right in half.  To this day, I have a soft spot for enjoying music outdoors. There's something remarkable about looking at the sky, feeling grass beneath my feet, and letting the big sound of open-air music rush to meet my ears.
